Aside from teaching science, I spend part of the school day teaching chess. Not only is chess a great game, it is very cognitively demanding. Students who take the game seriously should expect an improvement in their concentration and problem solving skills. Students who have high enough MAP scores after the first round of MAP testing can sign up for my Chess Club which runs everyday during Sync class. Chess club starts up after the first round of MAP testing which is about 4 weeks into the school year. The chess club roster changes after the 2nd and 3rd 9 weeks which means that students who don't sign up fast enough to get into the first class will get in later in the school year.
After students get acclimated to the rules, we have individual and team tournaments. Below you can download a pdf of basic chess rules.
